The London Road building has been radically transformed to create the LSBU Hub, an open and inviting centrepiece for its main Southwark campus.
The existing structure was largely retained, saving 65% on embodied carbon which is just under half of the 2030 RIBA benchmark targets, and incorporates carbon fibre strengthening in areas where it needed further reinforcement.
The building has achieved BREEAM Very Good Rating. The major makeover included the extensive internal reconfiguration of the existing sports and catering facilities and the refurbishment of seven retained lecture theatres, film studios and cinema space and incorporated the relocated library.
The regeneration of Battersea Power Station, a Grade II* listed landmark, has created a vibrant new mixed-use development with the magnificently restored Turbine Halls forming the main public areas.
The architectural interventions respect the integrity of the historic landmark while creating new events spaces, shops, restaurants and cafés, large open-plan office spaces and a series of sky villas positioned around rooftop garden squares above the Boiler House and Turbine Halls.
