We have designed a number of buildings for Queen Mary, University of London, a Russell Group member with a highly regarded research programme and a prominent site in East London, albeit one which lacked a singular identity. WilkinsonEyre’s brief in repositioning the campus included a need for greater visibility in the wider cityscape.
The Mathematics Building (2011) creates a new foyer and social/study space for the School of Mathematical Sciences, establishing a strongly identifiable entrance to the campus on the Mile End Road in east London. It also includes the refurbishment of a lecture theatre to the highest environmental and acoustic standards.
Also for the University of London, the City Law School in Clerkenwell (2021) is a skilful combination of new build and refurbishment forming a variety of study and learning spaces for this established provider of legal education, and includes a moot court, law library, study areas and academic offices. The form of the building mediates between the scale of the surrounding Georgian residential streets and the taller and more varied urban grain of Goswell Road.
