The redevelopment of the historic Allen Stand at Lord's Cricket Ground has commenced following the end of the season.
The new stand has been designed to retain the distinctive character of the original while greatly enhancing comfort, facilities, and accessibility for Members and guests. Continuing the theme of innovative architecture at Lord’s, it will deliver a significantly improved experience that balances modern features with tradition.
In line with MCC’s commitment to achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2030, the design incorporates solar panels, meets BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards, and includes dedicated measures for heritage preservation.
Upgraded facilities will include pitch-facing bars on all three levels, a 60-seat café, and modern washrooms, alongside a reimagined Middlesex Room and the restoration of the much-loved Members’ Bridge to the Pavilion.
Historic features such as the original “Q” sign and the bust of Sir George “Gubby” Allen will be integrated into the new design, ensuring the stand honours its past as it is revitalised for the future.
This milestone follows the conclusion of the international season and marks almost a decade since the launch of the Ground Development Programme at Lord’s, which began with the construction of the Warner Stand. The Allen Stand redevelopment is scheduled for completion in early 2027, with planned pauses for cricket during the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
The redevelopment forms part of MCC’s long-term vision to enhance Lord’s Cricket Ground while maintaining its iconic status, and follows the completion of WilkinsonEyre’s Compton and Edrich Stands in 2021.
Sam Wright, Board Director at WilkinsonEyre said: "Our designs for the Allen Stand capture the essence of the old Sir Herbert Baker Stand, preserving the cherished traditions valued by Members. Featuring a dual-fronted design, the stand is a distinctive building with an elegant, lightweight canopy, contributing to the ongoing evolution of the Lord’s Cricket Ground skyline."
Robert Ebdon, Director at MCC Estates, said: “The Allen Stand is the oldest seating structure in the Ground, other than the Pavilion, and this redevelopment will provide outstanding facilities for use in the decades to come. The new stand blends modern innovation with cherished original features and will take pride of place between the Grace Gate and the Pavilion – the perfect welcome for visitors entering Lord’s via its most historic entrance.”
