Stafford has been at Wilkinson Eyre for 35 years, was founder of the practice's education team and has been a Board Director since 2005.

He is currently leading two projects involving low carbon transformations of listed buildings: New College at the University of St Andrews and the conversion of the 1824 St John’s Wood Riding School in Westminster.

Key completed projects include the Forum at the University of Exeter, the Earth Sciences building in Oxford, Eddington low carbon key worker housing in Cambridge, ‘We the Curious’ interactive science centre in Bristol - a millennium project - and most recently the LSBU Hub in Elephant & Castle, entailing the re-purposing and transformation of an existing 1970s building.

Stafford has sat on the Historic England Advisory Committee (HEAC) since 2023 and was a founding trustee of the University Design Forum (formerly HEDQF). Previously, he sat on the Design: South East and Islington design review panels, the CABE school design panel and the RIBA Education Committee. He has lectured at various schools of architecture, is professional studies adviser to the University of Cambridge, and is an occasional contributor/reviewer for Architecture Today and RIBAJ as well as co-author/editor of Tectonics: A Building for Earth Sciences in Oxford (2011) and Wilkinson Eyre: Works (2014).
