King’s Cross, led by Argent, is the largest urban redevelopment scheme in Europe and the rich industrial heritage of the site is integral to its renaissance. Among the most distinctive and beautiful features to be retained is a linked trio of gasholder guide frames, constructed in 1867, now Grade II listed and the world’s only connected trio of this kind to be refurbished for residential use.
The concept proposed three cylindrical volumes of varying heights, echoing the movement of the original gasholders, which rose and fell in response to gas pressure.
In collaboration with Argent, we explored contemporary residential trends to shape an exceptional living experience. The design includes business lounges and spa facilities at ground level, with cinema rooms and event spaces located on the upper floors.
This approach is expressed at every scale, from large elements like perforated steel shutters and intersecting balconies in the atrium, to finer touches such as cast-iron door handles and brass detailing. WilkinsonEyre oversaw much of the design delivery during the later stages.
Three cylindrical volumes enclose a central courtyard, celebrating the intersection of the cast-iron structures and allowing natural light to reach the heart of the development.
